After a grueling 4-1 loss to Barcelona earlier in the season, you would think that Real Madrid would’ve had the passion in their heart to try and take down Barcelona. As we have seen many times before, such as in the Rodrygo Champions League comeback, you can never count out the white and gold. As well as this passion, Real Madrid also had a trophy to play for, as it was the Supercopa final. The road to the final had been seemingly light for both teams, with Real Madrid dismantling Mallorca 3-0, a club that has been in and out of La Liga and the second division. Barca had a harder draw, playing Athletic Club, led by the Williams brothers (Inaki and Nico) and Daniel Vivian, a hard-nosed center-back for the 4th-seeded La Liga club. Nonetheless, Barcelona shut them down with a 2-0 performance, with goals from Gavi and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. With both teams comfortably taking down their opponents, it was slated to be a battle of the giants. The mixture of the biggest rivalry in the history of soccer and one of Spain’s most prestigious trophies should’ve been one of the games of the year.
Instead, it was arguably a worse loss for Real Madrid than the 4-1 score earlier in October. Funnily enough, Real Madrid initially led at one point, with an early goal from star signing Kylian Mbappe. All over the world, Real Madrid fans were grinning from ear to ear, thinking about how this trophy would look on their already stacked resume. With Barca’s subpar performance in La Liga, including a loss to Leganes and Atletico Madrid in the games before, it wouldn’t be hard to feel a sense of confidence. It was safe to say that Madrid fans might’ve been looking too far ahead instead of worrying about maintaining their lead. In the next 45 minutes, Barcelona would dish out one of the biggest goal floods of their season. In minute 22, who else but Lamine Yamal would score an amazing solo goal to tie the opposition. After this goal, Raphinha, Barcelona’s breakout player of the season, orchestrated a masterful attack, stringing together a brace with an assist as the cherry on top. With a penalty from Robert Lewandowski - the lead player for the Pichichi award - and left-back Alejandro Balde scoring, Barcelona sealed their 15th Supercopa and proved that they are still a top team in the world.
